Bamboo rice is sweet, pungent, nutritious and strong. It helps to cure kapha & pitta doshas, remove toxic substances from the body and cures the disease in which the vital humors of the body are excreted through urine.

The nutritious and health value of bamboo rice is very remarkable. It is much healthier than rice from paddy. Seeds are used to treat menstrual disorders, respiratory diseases and infections.  It’s rich content of proteins controls back pain, joint pains and rheumatic pain. The other medicinal and health benefits includes maintaining right levels of sugar, cholesterol and keeping blood pressure in control. Good for pregnant women to overcome vitamin deficiency.

Studies conducted on the Kani tribes in Kanyakumari forests have shown that they consume Bamboo rice for its fertility enhancing properties.

Bamboo rice is not commonly available since their flowering pattern is highly unpredictable and it may vary from a few years to up to 100 years for a bamboo plant to flower.

How Is Bamboo Rice Cooked?

It can be cooked and consumed just like our regular rice. Bamboo rice has a nice chewy taste and is very similar to unpolished rice. It goes well with most Indian curries.

Method:

Wash and soak 1 cup of bamboo rice for a day in a vessel. Then wash with that water again and strain. Now pour excess water and cook the rice in a vessel (preferably in an earthen pot instead of pressure cooker). Strain the excess water after the rice gets cooked as shown in the above picture. One could also ferment the strained water and make a soup out of it which is highly nutritious.

If you find this cooking method difficult then simply make powder of the soaked rice and prepare soup out of that powder and have it.
